| Queenscliff or Queenscliffe? Q. Why is Queenscliff sometimes spelt with an 'e' on the end? A. The difference in the spelling is a matter of history and is on the public record. The name of the township 'Queenscliff' was first gazetted in June of 1853. The 'Borough of Queenscliffe' was formed in May 1863 and again the name comes directly from the Government Gazette at the time. This in fact is a proper name for the incorporated body which represents the district of the the Borough of Queenscliffe which includes the towns of Queenscliff and Point Lonsdale.
Nowadays, when people use 'Queenscliffe' they are generally referring to both Queenscliff & Point Lonsdale. | |
