Council confirms Australia Day celebrations for 2018

Tuesday, 16 January 2018

The Borough of Queenscliffe Council has confirmed it will operate its Australia Day 26 January celebrations in accordance with its existing Australia Day policy.

Borough of Queenscliffe Mayor Susan Salter confirmed that no consideration of a change was before Council at this time.

“Australia Day is arguably one of the most popular civic events held annually, which respects and includes all sectors of the community,” stated Cr Salter.

The celebrations include:

  • Welcome to Country ceremony
  • An Australian citizenship ceremony
  • An official flag raising ceremony
  • Address from the Mayor
  • Australia Day Awards presentations
  • Presentation by an Australia Day Ambassador

The Queenscliffe Community Nursery gives away a free native tree to each family at the celebration and a sausage sizzle is provided by the local Lions Club.

Australia Day celebrations are a local community event where everyone is welcome and participation is encouraged.

“It is up to the Federal Government to deliberate over the date of Australia Day and such a decision would have to be based on broad community consultation and support,” said Cr Salter.
