Don’t mind the beetles

Thursday, 03 January 2013

You may have noticed some new visitors have arrived with swarms of flying insects in and around the Borough.
They are believed to be soldier beetles. Please don't be alarmed, as the beetles are harmless; however, as a precaution, keep children away from the swarms to avoid the risks of swallowing the beetles.

Soldier beetles are beneficial to gardens, as they help protect the nectar of plants and kill pests such as aphids.
Many areas of Victoria are experiencing particularly high numbers of these beetles at the moment. This is a natural occurrence and the beetles will move on.

Spraying with chemicals or pest control measures is not recommended because when one swarm has been eradicated another may take its place.
