From 1 July 2013, at the direction of the State Government, Victorian Councils must administer and collect the State-imposed Fire Services Property Levy.
Following a recommendation of the Victorian Bushfires Royal Commission, the State Government has changed the way it collects revenue to pay for fire fighting services. Residents will no longer need to pay for a fire services levy through their property insurance. Instead, a separate charge for this State Government tax will be included on property owners' rates notice.
Victorian councils are required to collect the fire services levy on behalf of State Government, through their annual rates notices, and forward this to the State Government.
The Fire Services Property Levy will be listed as a separate item on your rates notice, and you'll be able to pay it in four instalments with your rates payments.
