Lifeboat Shed Stories at Queenscliff South Pier

Walk the pier and step inside the refurbished historic Lifeboat Shed perched at the end to uncover Queenscliff's history of wrecks, rescues and local heroes who manned the lifeboats in Queenscliff from the 1850's. The dramatic launch of the lifeboat from the shed into the water is one of the town's favourite maritime tales. Join a 25-minutes short tour every Thursday or Saturday only in October.

When Queenscliff’s last lifeboat finished in 1976 it was preserved by the town to eventually become the centrepiece of the Queenscliffe Maritime Museum. Its stories of wrecks, heroic rescues, its practices, and the lives of the lifeboat crews are part of the town’s maritime lore. For over 100 years the lifeboat crews from Queenscliff helped save hundreds of lives from wrecks close to the entrance to Port Phillip.

The Lifeboat Shed perched on the end of Queenscliff’s South pier is an iconic landmark but it was closed for decades. With the restoration of the Lifeboat Shed in 2021 by Parks Victoria, Queenscliffe Maritime Museum is now offering short tours at the Lifeboat Shed every Thursday and Saturday during October only.

This new event, Lifeboat Shed Stories, will bring to life the history of the lifeboat, the lifeboat sheds, and the piers in the maritime precinct of town.

The 25-minutes tours will be every Thursday and Saturday only from Saturday 1 October, at 11.15am, 12 noon, 1.00pm and 1.30pm in the Lifeboat Shed on Queenscliff South Pier. The tour fee includes an entry voucher to Queenscliffe Maritime Museum nearby to view the last motorised Lifeboat "Queenscliffe" that was launched from the shed, and see the rocket rescue equipment, and artefacts from rescues.
