At the Ordinary Meeting of Council last night, Councillor Donnie Grigau was elected as Mayor of the Borough of Queenscliffe for the term of one year. Fellow Councillor Di Rule will serve as Deputy Mayor.

Mayor Grigau thanked his Councillors for their support, noting his commitment to represent Council as a group, “I am here to be the spokesperson for the whole Council group, not for myself. My role is to communicate our shared decisions and present one consistent, respectful voice to the community”.

The newly elected Mayor outlined his focus for the year ahead, “My aim to support open discussion, good governance and decision guided by evidence and community engagement. Our direction is already set by the Community Vision and Council Plan, and will stay focused on delivering what our rate payers and community have asked for”.

Mayor Grigau went on to highlight several key priorities, “This includes protecting and celebrating our heritage, from Fisherman's Flat to our Maritime and Military history. Supporting community wellbeing, including navigating the Federal Aged Care reforms in a way that respects our long tradition of local care. Delivering Climate and Environmental projects including coastal management, water planning, weeding and energy efficiency improvements. And ensuring responsible financial management across our work”.

Mayor Grigau closed with his commitment for his term as Mayor, “The Borough of Queenscliffe deserves a Council that works together, and a Mayor that brings people together. Now let’s get to work”.

Council also nominated Councillors to the new portfolio themes during the meeting. Councillors were elected to portfolio responsibilities as follows:

Theme 1. Living in the Borough – Cr. Monahan

Theme 2. Building the Borough – Cr. Rule

Theme 3. Work, play & stay in the Borough – Cr. Grigau

Theme 4. Running the Borough – Cr. Tolhurst

Theme 5. Caring for the Borough – Cr. Cameron
