Next event date: Saturday, 15 November 2025 | 10:00 AM to 03:00 PM
An opportunity for the public to visit the Bellarine Railway Queenscliff Workshop (26 Bridge Street). View progress with restoration of a steam locomotive, steam crane, 145 years old carriage and a small tractor powered locomotive. Inspect the projects close up, examine components, walk inside the locomotive cab and the carriage. You may wish to join up to assist with the work.
Volunteers turn up on Tuesdays and Saturdays to carry out many and varied tasks to overhaul and restore the projects. Some tasks require skills such as boiler making, fitting and turning or carpentry, but many tasks only require enthusiasm and an interest in being shown what to do and why. Interest in meal room chat over tea or coffee is encouraged.
The steam locomotive was built in 1945 and is the only survivor of 65 designed and constructed in Australia in great haste as a wartime measure. The carriage dates from 1879 and is one of the oldest being restored to operational condition in Australia. A steam crane built in 1912 will be in steam and demonstrated.
