In a Persian Garden: an afternoon concert and high tea

A song cycle (1896) for four voices by Liza Lehmann, based on the legendary poem, "Rubaiyat" by Omar Khayyam and presented by the Dunolly Gilbert and Sullivan Society. The audience will not only enjoy a fabulous concert but also indulge in a high tea after the performance. The concert is to benefit the congregation at St Paul's, St Leonards, to help their recovery from last summer's terrible fire.

Join us as we celebrate the great Edwardian song-writer Liza Lehmann in a rare performance of her beloved song-cycle masterpiece, "In a Persian Garden". This is a setting from 1896 of the renowned "Rubaiyat" by Omar Khayyam for soprano, contralto, tenor and bass with piano accompaniment.

Contemplate with us the beauties of nature, the mysteries of existence, the joys of wine and the necessity of seizing the day. Narrated by Rachel Buckley (you may remember her as Queen Victoria), "In a Persian Garden" tells Liza Lehmann's story in captivating word and glorious song. The artists are experienced performers in opera and operetta: Amelia Ryan (soprano); Helen Hill (contralto); Brett O'Meara (tenor) and Ian Woolford (bass-baritone). Geoff Urquhart is the redoubtable pianist.

The Anglican Parish of Queenscliff and Point Lonsdale is hosting the afternoon and proceeds will be donated to the parishioners at St Leonards to help their recovery from the devastating fire at Christmas that destroyed their church hall and badly damaged their little church. The Old School, with its open fires and historic atmosphere is the perfect location for "In a Persian Garden". The ticket price includes the concert and high tea.
