Let’s Be Clear on Glass

Let's Be Clear

The Borough of Queenscliffe has joined more than 30 councils across Victoria in supporting Let’s Be Clear on Glass, a statewide campaign calling on the Victorian Government to pause the rollout of a fourth household glass bin and instead expand Victoria’s Container Deposit Scheme (CDS).

Councils involved in the campaign have raised concerns about the cost, complexity, and practicality of introducing a separate glass bin. These include higher household charges, the need for additional trucks and infrastructure, and increased operational demands - impacts that can be particularly challenging for smaller and coastal councils like the Borough of Queenscliffe.

Instead, councils are advocating for the Container Deposit Scheme to be expanded to include wine and spirit bottles, building on systems already in place in other Australian states. Expanding the CDS is seen as a simpler, more cost‑effective way to improve glass recycling outcomes, reduce contamination, and boost participation - without adding another bin or collection service for households.

Community feedback is a key part of this conversation. We are encouraging residents to have their say on preferred recycling solutions by completing a short survey and sharing their views on how glass recycling can work best for their household and community.
