Cr Donnie Grigau –  Health & Wellbeing

Hello to all in the beautiful Borough of Queenscliffe on Wadawurrung Country. I hope you’re all keeping warm and safe as we enter the colder months. As the Councillor responsible for the Health and Wellbeing Portfolio, I want to share a few tips for staying healthy as the chill approaches.

"Winter is coming" – a familiar phrase for all Game of Thrones enthusiasts. It symbolizes constant vigilance and serves as a reminder to stay prepared at all times. These are wise words to remember as the temperature drops, as this often brings an increase in the common cold and other respiratory illnesses. Protect yourself, your family and your community by picking up your free rapid antigen tests (RATs) from Wirrng Wirrng (Queenscliffe Hub) and testing for COVID at the first sign of symptoms.

During the winter months, there's one thing we should brace ourselves for: Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD). This particular form of depression follows a seasonal pattern, often striking during the winter. Similar to other types of depression, SAD is characterized by a persistent low mood and a diminished interest in life. If you suffer from SAD or find yourself feeling flat or lethargic in the winter months, you are not alone.

To combat the effects of SAD, there are a wide range of engaging activities, both indoors and outdoors, which can assist. These activities aim to ward off the symptoms associated with SAD and help you navigate through the winter with a sense of vitality:

  1. Get outside: Spend time outdoors during daylight hours to get natural sunlight. Even something as simple as enjoying a cup of tea outside can provide you with some much-needed vitamin D.
  2. Exercise regularly: Engage in physical activity to boost your mood and reduce symptoms of winter blues. Why not try a walk along our beautiful rail trail, or along our picturesque beaches?
  3. Maintain a healthy diet: Eat a balanced diet with plenty of fruits, vegetables, and omega-3 rich foods, such as salmon, walnuts, etc.
  4. Practice self-care: Prioritise activities that relax and bring you joy, such as reading or taking baths.
  5. Socialise and connect: Spend time with friends and family, both in person and virtually, or try volunteering at one of our many wonderful local organisations.
  6. Plan winter activities: Embrace the season by participating in activities like beach walks, seeing local football/netball games or bike riding.

R U OK?

Prioritizing our mental wellbeing is of utmost importance. Seeking help is never a sign of defeat; in fact, it's a courageous step towards healing. Remember, support is always within reach. Reach out to a trusted friend or family member and ask, "R U OK?"
To name a few of the helplines available to offer assistance:

Beyond Blue:
Phone: 1300 224 636

Lifeline Australia:
Phone: 13 11 14

Kids Helpline:
Phone: 1800 55 1800

These helplines are valuable resources that provide a listening ear and support during challenging times. Don't hesitate to reach out when you need it. Your wellbeing matters.

One way to combat the winter blues is to embrace the magic of the winter solstice in Queenscliff with the highly anticipated Nightide event, an enchanting celebration brought to you by the Borough of Queenscliffe, Searoad Ferries and the Queenscliff Music Festival. The free event will take place between Queenscliff South Pier and the Queenscliff ferry terminal. Join us on Saturday 24 June, from 4.30pm to 10pm for a mesmerizing night filled with captivating experiences.

Prepare to be transported to a world of magic as live music fills the air, creating an enchanting soundscape that will captivate your senses. An array of food options and drinks from the region will be available.

As we celebrate the winter solstice, be mesmerized by crackling bonfires that will warm your spirit and create an inviting ambiance. For those seeking an invigorating experience, embrace the opportunity to partake in beachside ice baths, revitalizing both your body and soul.

And that's not all – ready yourself for a dazzling fireworks display that will light up the night sky, adding a touch of brilliance to this extraordinary event. Nightide is a festival curated for those who crave vibrant celebrations and unforgettable moments.

Take care of yourself and your loved ones. As always, please feel free to communicate with me and/or any of the Borough of Queenscliffe Councillors via the contact details on Council’s website.

Until next time,

Cr Donnie Grigau
